Resources for the Syro-Hexapla
The Syro-Hexapla is a literal translation into Syriac of Origen's Septuagint column. The first full translation is thought to have been made by Pawlos of Tella around 616-17 AD. The Sryo-Hexapla has proved to be of immense value to scholars due to the preservation of Origen's critical signs as well as occasional fragments from other versions of the Septuagint.
New Syro-Hexaplaric texts by Publication Date: 1968Conrad W. Baar collected and surveyed manuscripts for Brill's critical edition of the Peshitta. Along the way, Baar gathered a wealth of unknown Syro-Hexaplaric texts at the time. All of these texts appeared as excerpts in lectionaries. Building upon previous work, Baar published these texts. Baar also provides an apparatus with variant readings from Isho'dad, Barhebraeus, and Masius among others. He also includes a section in which he collates his material with the Cambridge edition of the Septuagint.
- Codex Syro-Hexaplaris Ambrosianus
Antonio Maria Ceriani, Prefect of the Library Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan, Italy, very carefully made photolithographic facsimile editions of biblical texts. One of these texts is the eighth-century Codex Ambrosianus—the main source for the Syro-Hexapla. Although probably not the original, it is believed to be faithful to Pawlos of Tella's text - Bibliothecae Syriacae
Paul de Lagarde (1827-1891) succeeded Heinrich Ewald as the professor of Eastern Languages at the University of Göttingen.
The Ambrosian Codex has preserved the Psalms, Job, Proverbs, Qohelet, Canticles, Wisdom, Sirach, Minor Prophets, Jeremiah, Baruch, Lamentations, Epistle of Jeremiah, Daniel, Ezekial and Isaiah.
Other books of the Bible have slowly been discovered. De Legarde's volume attests to portions of Genesis, Exodus, Numbers, Joshua, Judges and Ruth, and Kings. The beginning of the book contains these texts, edited by De Legarde, laid out next to their Greek Vorlagen.
The Pentateuch in the version of the Syro-Hexapla: a fac-simile edition of a Midyat MS. discovered 1964 by Publication Date: 1975In 1964, Arthur Vööbus discovered the Midyat Codex (Twelfth Century). The codex contained all the books of the Pentateuch, specifically 32:9-Deut 32:25. Thus the majority of the Syro-Hexaplaric Pentateuch became complete, with the exception of a few missing fragments.
